Summer Storytelling Course
Storytelling, it’s in my bones. Some unwritten part of my DNA whispers stories wherever I turn. My paternal grandfather did it through oil painting. His brother, by being one of the top crime reporters for the San Francisco Chronicle. My mom has a closet full of photo albums, both ours, and some from her childhood. I have a book of tied together stories and photos from when my maternal grandfather went on a row boat adventure in 1926. My life has been shaped by a lineage of storytellers.
That’s why creating a storytelling class is important to me. Having the ability to take my skillset and give others the tools to do the same feels right. Humans move to the rhythm of seasons and so that’s why the course is based around a specific time of year. On the practical side of things, the summer is also when we’re all traveling and taking a lot of photos.
“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.”
This course is online so that anyone, anywhere, can attend. If you want to learn, I want to make sure you have a seat at the table. Rather than making you read paragraph after paragraph as to all that you’re going to learn, let me break it down.
-We meet virtually once a week on Tuesday evenings, 7pm-8pm EST, for 5 weeks.
-Before meeting I’ll have provided handouts or a resource that’ll help you be prepared for the week’s content.
-Each week you will have a short homework assignment (I’m a mom of littles and constantly busy, I promise it won’t be anything you can’t achieve within a week!)
-There will be a private Facebook group (I know, I know, but this seems to be the best platform for groups).
-Within the FB group all resources, PDFs, videos, and PowerPoints will be shared.
-Storytelling elements will be drawn from Sharon Blackie’s If Women Rose Rooted, Joseph Campbell’s The Power of Myth, Kindra Hall’s Stories that Stick, and more!
-Photography elements will come from David DuChemin’s work, Dorothea Lange, and more!
-The class is FOR YOU! That means you get to ask all the questions, have conversations, dive into your own story, and make it fun. I HATE to talk at people and love to talk with people, so it won’t be super boring...I also have a lot of really good dad jokes, but please don't make me use them.
-Once throughout the course each student will have a virtual or in-person one-on-one session for 45 minutes. This gives you the opportunity to focus on your story, questions, camera, editing, whatever you want!
-Only 10 seats are available to keep the class size small.
-$225 for the 5 weeks. Invest in yourself, you deserve it.
-Classes will be recorded for those who may have to miss a session.
-Camera recommended but not required.
DEADLINE TO SIGN UP APRIL 22
Once you've signed up I'll have a questionnaire for you to fill out that way I can tailor the class to exactly what you want. There will be a recommended (not required!) reading list as well.
Our world is changing quickly. Whether it is your family or our society's story you wish to tell, future generations will look back at photos. This class unlocks photography and guides you toward your own story, future, and so much more.
